The Category is the anchoring object that defines the organizational structure of a product List. A Collections represents various merchandising objectives such as organizational requirements, multi-regional assortments, multi-channel assortments, collections, using separate browsing structures.

Attribute inheritance

The role of the Category is to allow the user to set up items into categories and subcategories. For example, if the category for long-sleeve t-shirts is Clothing > T-shirts > Long-sleeve t-shirts, you can add attributes to each of these categories. The subcategories will inherit these attributes. For example, a “Brand” attribute added to the clothing category will be inherited by t-shirts and long-sleeve t-shirts.

Category

The Category lets you create a tree structure of subcategories to segregate products. Every item must belong to one category or subcategory. There is no limit to the number of categories or subcategories.

Categories and subcategories are best explained with the tree analogy.

The root is the category. As an example, clothing will be the category. The branches coming off of the root are the subcategories of clothing, like shirts and pants. A leaf is the end of a branch, representing the individual product. In this example, a leaf could be a long-sleeve graphic t-shirt. Visually, that would give us something like this:

📘 Example of the Tree Analogy

  • Root: Clothing
    • Branch: Shirts
      • Leaf: Long sleeve t-shirts
        • Product: Graphic long sleeve t-shirt 1
        • Product: Graphic long sleeve t-shirt 2
      • Leaf: Short sleeve t-shirts
        • Product: Graphic short sleeve t-shirt 1
        • Product: Graphic short sleeve t-shirt 2
    • Branch: Pants
      • Leaf: Skinny jeans
        • Product: Juniors skinny jean
      • Leaf: Wide-leg jeans
        • Product: Juniors wide-leg jean
